1/25/2017 Meeting

  • Amount of time that we spend trying to assist patron on the computer. – If you are assigned on the desk and a customer is requiring extensive help with computer or other issue then please ask an associate for assistance with that customer. Try to be present on the desk as much as possible.
  • Answering the phone
  • Returning flip-kits
  • Computer Passes – located in the first drawer at each station. As a rover you may carry some around you assist patrons.
  • Please ask the patron if they have a library card prior to handing them out a computer pass
  • Do not make computer reservations from the desk!
  • Rotation of the schedule
  • After-School Meal Program/ Teen Zone
  • Absence of tardy – Must speak with supervisor or some other person authorized by supervisor within 30 minutes after start time
  • Employee lunches cannot be shortened below 30 minutes if working over 6 hours
    -15 minutes break for each hour work period; not to extend lunch or shorten work day
    -6 or more hours work time, must have  a 30 minute lunch
    -Death in family Leave – up to 3 days; father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, child, stepchild, grandparent and grandchild – Some special consideration can be given in other cases. Submit obituary or funeral program
  • Benefit year – September 1 – August 31
  • Wellness – Any increment up to 8 hours- Use by end of August – must bring Doctor’s note/Return to work letter
  • Wellness leave is not sick leave – used for preventative measures
  • Floating holidays – if hired on or before June 30, will get floating holiday that year
  • Must be used by end of calendar year
    Request 30 days in advance
  • Vacation may be used after 6 month of employment –Unused will be paid out when employee leaves

    “You may use earned vacation after six months of employment. You may take up to 90 days of vacation in a calendar year. Upon termination, you are eligible to be paid for unused accrued vacation leave, as follows:
(1) If you were hired prior to January 1, 2000, you may accrue and carry forward from year to year a maximum of 840 vacation hours; and upon termination, you can be paid up to 720 accrued, unused hours;
(2) If you were hired on or after January 1, 2000, you may accumulate and carry forward a maximum of 420 vacation hours; and upon termination, you can be paid up to 360 accrued, unused hours. More information here
  • Accrued Holiday – paid out after 180 days. Check aging report
  • Comp time paid out after 120 days
  • Leave of absence without pay – up to 14 days (director) – up to 90 days (civil service commission) Total of 180 days in 12 month period – Anything over 180 days – city council
  •             FMLA -  has worked for City for 12 months – paternity leave, only as vacation time, not sick time-Required to use your accrued time before using unpaid time
          -Kronos procedure has changed some -Ensure that the staff member is on FMLA through Sharon Alvarez-If unpaid, employee must pay own benefit
  •        Outside Employment – requires written approval
  •  Nepotism – No direct supervisory responsibility for relative (much wider definition of relative)
  •   Disciplinary Action (Section E of -Insubordination
    -Rude or obnoxious behavior
    -Possession of dangerous weapons
    -Failure to discharge duties of the job
  •   Solicitation by employees is prohibited
  •   Keys-PT employees – no key codes or gate remote
    -Lost key, code or gate remote incident report within 2 days
  • ·          Minors, 17 and under, 9 – 2:30pm curfew on school days if unaccompanied by guardian
          -14 and under unattended after hours, must stay with them until their ride comes
          -Librarian in charge and one other staff member must wait at some distance from child
          -In Inclement weather, child can wait inside building

  •            Holds
          -Maximum of 30 holds
    -Stay on shelf for 7 days-Automatically expire, if unfilled after 365 days
  •               Temporary Resident cards
          -Good for 30 days
    -Need address confirmation on official letterhead-Check out three items at a time
  • Staff Card – Do not abuse your staff privileges
  • ·         Texshare Card – We do not issue cards at branches, form must be sent to central (if client needs same same day access, they can obtain it from Central library)
          -City of Houston resident
    -Have the card for at least 6 months
    -Card is current
    -No fines or fees
    -Expires each July 31st-Any fines accrued, after six months will be billed to HPL patron account
  •  Jury Duty is for 4 to 8 hours. This depends of whether you are selected or not. (Should return to work if not selected).
